Wood processing is one of the industries that plays an important role in the province’s industrial development. The fourth industrial revolution and the increasingly strict requirements on quality, safety, environmental friendliness, product origin, etc. of the world market force wood production and processing activities to adapt.
Producing laminated wood for export at Thanh Lam Company Limited, Ngoc Quan Commune, Doan Hung District.
The whole province has about 200 enterprises, cooperatives, over 700 wood processing establishments, and about 2,000 household-scale wood processing households. Wood products are diverse from raw materials to refined products such as chips, peeled boards, sawn boards, planks, compressed wood pellets, firewood, MDF boards, HDF boards, household wooden furniture... Wood products are consumed domestically and exported to markets in countries such as the US, China, Japan, Korea,...
The number of wood processing facilities is relatively large but mainly on a small scale; the cooperation and linkage between enterprises, processing facilities, and forest growers is not tight; semi-processed and raw processed products account for a large proportion, so the value is low. Currently, the requirements of consumers, especially in international markets for wood products, are increasingly high. Strict regulations on the environment and sustainable development are being set by partners, large buyers, and countries with developed economies. Businesses must change to meet these standards, from using wood with sustainable forest management certificates to applying environmentally friendly production processes.
Faced with market changes, businesses are forced to innovate technology, form production links, have investment plans, improve quality, and increase competitiveness domestically and internationally. Accompanying businesses, the province regularly grasps problems and issues related to businesses producing key product groups, including the wood industry, to increase production value. Promote industrial promotion; focus on attracting potential businesses to invest in deep processing, in accordance with the planning of raw material areas. Encourage large-scale individual businesses to convert and upgrade to enterprise types to facilitate expansion of scale, operating area, and consumption market.
With an area of over 12,000 hectares of production forest land, Doan Hung district has great potential for developing wood processing associated with raw material areas. The whole district has nearly 50 businesses and hundreds of wood production and processing establishments. Mr. Vu Trong Khai, Head of the District Economic Infrastructure Department, said: “Wood processing is a strong industry of the district; the district encourages production establishments to invest in technological innovation towards deep and sustainable processing, building product brands. Timely implement industrial promotion and trade promotion programs to support enterprises and rural industrial establishments to invest in modern machinery and equipment, improve production capacity, and increase product competitiveness in the market. At the same time, actively propagate directly to establishments on ensuring legal regulations and labor safety in the field of forest product processing, contributing to sustainable development.”.
According to Plan No. 3915/KH-UBND, dated September 19, 2024, of the Provincial People’s Committee on implementing the Project on Restructuring the Industry and Trade Sector in the province until 2030, the tasks and solutions for the wood processing industry are to organize afforestation, convert large timber forests, and manage sustainable forests associated with enterprises processing deep wood products for export; encourage wood processing enterprises to participate in afforestation and develop local raw material areas. Reasonable arrangement of factories by region, in which priority is given to building factories in mountainous areas, developing support services for the industry, and investing in developing supporting industries for the wood processing and manufacturing industry. Synchronously implementing solutions will contribute to promoting the sustainable and effective development of the wood processing industry, following the value chain from afforestation, exploitation, processing, and product consumption, helping enterprises with sufficient capacity in technology and environment to participate in domestic and international market integration.
