One October weekend, we came to Xoan Retreat in Mo Hamlet, Da Bac Commune, Phu Tho Province. Far removed from the image of a typical resort, the place unfolded before us like a poetic watercolor painting—rustic yet refined. Though modest in size, every detail of the compound has been arranged with exquisite care, creating a space that offers visitors an experience truly worth savoring.

The first impression is the nine wooden houses, each serving as a guest room which were named after the nine hamlets of the former Hien Luong Commune, now part of Da Bac Commune. It is a meaningful way to honor the land and its heritage. Each house offers a private, cozy haven where guests can unwind and enjoy serenity.
A highlight not to be missed is the infinity pool, where the crystal-clear water seems to merge seamlessly with the emerald surface of the lake, creating a breathtakingly majestic view.
The soul of Xoan Retreat lies in its philosophy of harmony with nature. The designer has skillfully used almost entirely local materials—bamboo, wood, palm leaves, and stone to create an open, nature-embracing space. From the smallest items such as toothpick holders and room nameplates to tables and chairs, everything carries the breath of the mountains and forests.
Paths and foundations have been built in accordance with the natural terrain, preserving ancient trees and green spaces to the greatest extent possible. Two floating houses on the lake serve a dual purpose: they are both fish cages and experiential areas where visitors can try their hand at fish hauling, kayaking, or simply casting a line amid the vast expanse of water.
Currently, Xoan Retreat provides stable employment for 25 local workers, along with additional seasonal construction labor. Beyond business operations, the retreat also pays attention to community welfare and social activities in the area.
Mr. Luu Anh Tu - Director of Xoan Retreat, shared his vision: “We didn’t come here with the ambition to build a massive resort. We wanted to create a true oasis—an oasis of peace for visitors. Our philosophy is simple: respect nature, honor local culture, and share benefits harmoniously. We see ourselves not merely as businesspeople, but as contributors to the beauty of this land in the most sustainable way possible.”
Models like Xoan Retreat are the kind of “highlights” that matter—living proof that tourism can thrive and remain humane without billion-dollar projects. It represents a sustainable path where natural beauty, local cultural values, and community life are placed at the center, generating a powerful driving force for local socio-economic development.
