Amidst the increasingly hectic pace of modern life, many tourists journey to Mai Chau not just to contemplate the mountains and forests, but to immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere of hamlets nestled quietly at the foot of the mountains. Among them, Pom Coong is widely regarded as an exemplary community-based tourism destination, where the cultural life of the Thai ethnic people is preserved almost perfectly intact.

Pom Coong Hamlet is situated at the center of Mai Chau Commune, Phu Tho Province. In the Thai language, the name “Pom Coong” translates to “a village of hills lying atop a giant drum,” metaphorically describing the vast, sweeping fields enclosed within the rolling mountains and hills. Currently, the hamlet houses over 70 households with more than 300 residents, predominantly Thai ethnic people who have coexisted here for generations.

What immediately captivates visitors to Pom Coong is its signature Northern mountainous landscape. Traditional stilt houses are interspersed among rice paddies, rows of areca palms, and narrow pathways, creating a rare and peaceful atmosphere. In the distance, layers of green mountain ranges embrace the Mai Chau Valley, forming a scenic backdrop that many travelers liken to a vivid landscape painting of the highlands.

The stilt houses in Pom Coong are primarily constructed from bamboo, timber, or buong (giant bamboo), raised about 2 meters above the ground by solid wooden pillars. While the roofs were historically covered with rattan leaves or thatch, many families have upgraded to modern roofing materials today, yet they strictly preserve the traditional architectural layout of the Thai people.

Beyond its natural scenery, Pom Coong exerts a powerful magnetism through its community cultural life, which remains vividly preserved. Numerous families in the hamlet continue to practice traditional brocade weaving. Looms are commonly positioned beneath the stilt houses, where Thai women weave scarves, bags, skirts, and various handcrafted items for daily use and to sell to tourists.

One of the most beloved experiences for travelers arriving in Pom Coong is staying at a stilt-house homestay. Unlike modern commercial luxury resorts, the homestays here maintain an authentic living space closely connected to the daily lives of indigenous people. Tourists can sleep on stilt houses, savor traditional cuisine, and participate in cultural and art activities alongside the locals.

Evenings in Pom Coong often feature cultural exchange programs showcasing Xoe dances, Sap (bamboo) dances, and ethnic musical instrument performances. Many international tourists are particularly fond of the “live-with, eat-with, and work-with” experience with the indigenous residents of Pom Coong.

Cuisine stands out as another culinary highlight of community-based tourism here. Signature highland dishes such as bamboo-tube sticky rice, grilled meats, stream fish, sticky rice, and ruou can (tube wine) are meticulously prepared by local host families to serve their guests. Many visitors note that the ultimate charm lies not just in the food itself, but in the heartwarming atmosphere of gathering around the stilt house’s open hearth amidst the quiet, tranquil mountain night.

Pom Coong is breathtaking year-round, yet each season bears its own distinct beauty. Late May and early June mark the period when rice paddies begin to ripen into a golden yellow across the fields of the Mai Chau Valley. By September and October, the cool breeze combined with the golden hues of the terraced fields creates a picture-perfect setting highly favored by photographers.

In recent years, riding the wave of community-based tourism growth, Pom Coong has progressively evolved into a familiar stopover for numerous domestic and international tour groups. Nevertheless, the hamlet successfully safeguards a remarkably peaceful and unhurried space, free from overwhelming commercial noise.

Many experts emphasize that tourism development in Pom Coong must be closely intertwined with indigenous cultural conservation to prevent over-commercialization. The core values driving the allure of this hamlet rest not only upon its scenic natural beauty but in the lifestyle, architecture, and collective community spirit that the Thai people have faithfully preserved across generations.
