During these May days, Xom Mung (Cao Phong Commune) puts on a brilliant golden coat of Cosmos flowers (locally known as butterfly flowers). Across the terraced fields stretching along the hillsides, the vibrant floral colors blend with the early summer sunlight, creating a bright and captivating landscape that attracts crowds of tourists seeking sightseeing, photography, and a peaceful highland atmosphere.

The terraced fields, planted with seasonal flowers, are currently radiant with the golden hues of Cosmos flowers.

The blend of golden flowers and sunlight creates a picturesque landscape during these May days.

Alongside the golden terraced fields, poetic green tree-lined paths are a major plus for Xom Mung community-based tourism this season. Visitors can stroll, check in, or cycle to enjoy the fresh air.

Ms. Dinh Thi Ngoc, an eatery owner in Xom Mung, shares that although community-based tourism has only developed here for a few years, the locality has established various accommodation, dining, entertainment, and photography services. On weekends and holidays, many tourists flock to Xom Mung after visiting the famous orange hills of Cao Phong.

As a newly developing destination, Xom Mung tourism is attracting a large number of visitors for check-ins thanks to its creative, dedicated, and methodical approach.

A tourist enthusiastically checks in next to the terraced fields flooded with the brilliant gold of Cosmos flowers. Ms. Dinh Thi Ngoc notes that unique flowers like mustard greens and upland rice are rotated across large areas depending on the season, constantly changing the landscape through four seasons to charm visitors.

Currently, Xom Mung houses 5 to 6 homestay families providing full services including dining, lodging, check-ins, bicycle rentals, and refreshments. Despite being in its infancy, the destination adopts a highly methodical approach and planning for community-based tourism.

With 100% of the population being indigenous Muong people, Xom Mung sits at an altitude of 600m above sea level, enjoying a mild and cool climate year-round. Tourists often dub it a “miniature Sapa,” where a moderate drive up winding slopes rewards them with panoramic views of endless rolling mountains, making it immensely appealing.
Ms. Le Thi Thanh Phuong, a tourist from Viet Tri, shared that with its scenic landscapes, temperate climate, and intact indigenous cultural identity, Xom Mung has full potential to become a compelling destination in the Northwest region if it continues to receive methodical, scientific investments that leverage local cultural values.
This mirrors the experiential tourism trend that has gained growing popularity among travelers across the province in recent years, joining the ranks of well-known landmarks such as Lac Village and Xuan Son National Park.
