Nestled within the majestic Dau Rong (Dragon’s Head) mountain complex in Cluster 3, Cao Phong commune, Phong Son Cave has long been known as a scenic landscape of magical beauty, harmoniously blending nature with folk beliefs. Not only appealing due to its unique stalactite system formed over millions of years, this place is also a famous spiritual tourism destination, housing the main sanctuary dedicated to Lady Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh (The Invisible Lady Dieu Nghia)—associated with the Vietnamese Mother Goddess worship and the cultural life of the Muong ethnic group.

Mystical Beauty in the Heart of the Limestone Mountain
From the foot of Dau Rong Mountain, visitors follow the steps to reach the mouth of Phong Son Cave. Right from the entrance, the natural scenery already evokes a sense of mystery, with cliffs covered in green forest foliage and white clouds drifting leisurely around the mountainside. Stepping through the cave entrance, a different world unfolds with a vast space that remains cool all year round. Sparkling stalactite columns and stone drapes with countless fascinating shapes appear under the lights, creating a space that is both mystical and serene. This setting further heightens the sacredness of the cave, which has long been a place where locals place their faith, praying for national peace, prosperity, and family tranquility.
Inside the cave, a system of stalactites with many unique shapes is exquisitely sculpted by nature. There are stalactite formations resembling a writhing dragon, stone pillars standing like pillars holding up the sky, and stone drapes like silk ribbons dropping down from the cave dome. Under the lights, the stalactites shimmer with golden and silver hues, creating a sparkling, magical scene akin to a fairyland.

The stalactite system inside the cave is sparkling and magical, captivating people’s hearts.
Local people believe that each stalactite in the cave is tied to its own story and legend. It is this very aspect that creates a special appeal, making Phong Son Cave not only a natural wonder but also a spiritual cultural space rich in identity.
The harmonious combination of geological values, natural landscapes, and Mother Goddess worship has created a unique attraction, turning Phong Son Cave into a typical cultural and spiritual destination of the Muong region.
The special highlight of Phong Son Cave is the main sanctuary dedicated to Lady Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh. According to folk beliefs, the Lady is a deity credited with helping the people, protecting their peaceful lives, ensuring bountiful harvests, and bringing good luck to the residents of the region.
The worship space is solemnly arranged in the heart of the cave, where incense smoke blends with the natural beauty of the stalactites, creating a scene that is both sacred and mysterious. Every year, especially during the early spring and holidays throughout the year, large numbers of locals and tourists from all over gather to offer incense, praying for health, peace, bountiful crops, and a harmonious life.

The Imprint of Beliefs Worshipping Lady Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh
According to folk legend, Princess Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh was a daughter of the Hung King. From a young age, she was famous for being intelligent, resourceful, well-versed in state affairs, and deeply caring for the people’s lives. Recognizing his daughter’s exceptional talent, the Hung King entrusted her with organizing military logistics and provisions to serve campaigns and defend the borders. With resourcefulness, thoroughness, and long-term vision, she efficiently mobilized food and material resources, contributing significantly to victories in battles while ensuring a stable life for the people.
Phong Son Cave houses the main sanctuary dedicated to Lady Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh.
In addition to her strategic military skills and taking charge of provisions to help the Hung King, Princess Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh was also highly proficient in medicine, knowledgeable about forest medicinal plants, and possessed the talent to read hexagrams and predict good or bad fortunes. She often went into the forest to find various types of medicinal herbs to treat illnesses and save the poor, while using her knowledge of astronomy and seasonal calendars to guide villagers on when to plant crops to avoid natural disasters and epidemics. Because of these contributions, the people reverently called her Goddess of Healing, a symbol of benevolence, protection, and the ability to save sentient beings.
After her passing, she was deified and worshipped by the people as the Third Patriarch Lady Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh of the Muong. In Mother Goddess worship, she is one of the Three Lord Ladies of the Muong, and is also honored as one of the three incarnations of the Forest Mother Goddess at the Son Trang Cave sanctuary. Her image symbolizes wisdom, benevolence, sacrifice, and protection over the lives of mountain dwellers, and is therefore devoutly worshipped by the Muong people and tourists from all over across many generations.
Potential for Cultural and Spiritual Tourism Development
Amidst the rolling mountains of the Dau Rong mountain complex, along with Dong Son Temple and Bong Lai Temple, Phong Son Cave still retains its inherent mysterious beauty. This place is not only a destination to admire the masterpieces bestowed by nature, but also a spiritual and cultural address that helps tourists find peace and contemplation amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Stopping before the main sanctuary of Lady Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh, Ms. Nguyen Thị Lan, a tourist from Hanoi, reverently lit an incense stick and slowly shared: "I have heard many people introduce Phong Son Cave, but this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to visit and worship. The space inside the cave is very sacred, cool, and peaceful. Learning about Lady Dieu Nghia Tang Hinh—the deity revered by the people as the “Goddess of Healing”—makes me sense even more clearly the cultural and belief values left behind by our ancestors. This trip is not just a sightseeing journey but also helps me better understand and appreciate the cultural identity of the Muong land."
Deep inside the cave is the altar dedicated to the Three Lord Ladies of the Muong.
Not only famous for its spiritual value, Phong Son Cave is also an important part of the Dau Rong Mountain cave complex—a unique natural scenic landscape. With its pristine cave system, majestic limestone landscapes, and outstanding historical, cultural, and belief values, in 2012, Phong Son Cave along with the Dau Rong Mountain scenic complex was ranked as a National Monument by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Coming to Phong Son Cave, everyone can not only admire the mystical beauty of nature but also have the opportunity to learn about the unique values of Mother Goddess worship, feeling the cultural depth of the Muong land—where nature, history, and spirituality blend into a space full of legendary lore.
