For generations, the Hung King Worship Belief has become a sacred symbol in the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people. Beyond reflecting the moral principle of “When drinking water, remember its source,” this belief serves as a pillar of national solidarity, connecting the community and fostering pride in the nation’s origins.

In the hearts of Vietnamese people, the Hung Kings are always honored as the Ancestors of the nation. Throughout thousands of years of history, the Hung Kings have not only existed in historical records but have also been deeply imprinted in the cultural and spiritual lives of the people.
Every year, on the 10th day of the third lunar month, millions of people from across the country make a pilgrimage to the Hung Temple Historic Site to offer incense in memory of the Hung Kings' merits in founding the nation. According to cultural statistics, each year the site welcomes approximately 5.5 to 6 million visitors and compatriots coming to pay tribute to their predecessors.
The stream of people reverently offering incense in the Ancestral Land not only shows deep gratitude toward ancestors but also affirms the enduring vitality of the Hung King Worship Belief in the nation’s spiritual life. Currently, there are nearly 1,500 sites dedicated to the Hung Kings and related figures across the country, with the highest concentration in Phu Tho.
Distinctive Features of the Belief
The profound sense of community is a unique highlight of the Hung King Worship Belief. This belief is not limited to spiritual rituals; it is closely linked with cultural activities and traditional festivals, contributing to a rich spiritual life.
Ms. Duong Tong Kim Lien, a resident of Vinh Phuc Ward, shared: "As people of the Ancestral Land, we are always proud and deeply aware of the Hung King Worship Belief. This is not just a belief but a bond that connects the community, reminding every Vietnamese person to look toward their roots."
Similarly, Mr. Tran The Cong, a visitor from Hung Yen Province, emphasized: "Even though I don’t live in Phu Tho, my family prepares offerings to return here every anniversary. It is a way to preserve national cultural identity in modern life."
During the National Anniversary, many localities nationwide organize activities such as palanquin processions, folk art performances, and traditional festivals. Folk arts like Xoan singing and Gheo singing, associated with the Hung King era, are preserved and promoted. These are not only unique artistic values but also methods of transmitting history and traditions through generations.
The active participation of the community has helped the Hung King Worship Belief remain sustainable. In 2012, UNESCO recognized the Hung King Worship Belief as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This event affirmed the unique value of the belief, elevating Vietnam’s cultural position on the international stage.
Preserving Values in Modern Society
In recent years, many relics dedicated to the Hung Kings have been restored and renovated. Efforts to educate the younger generation on historical traditions are also prioritized through museum visits and heritage discovery activities.
Mr. Pham Tien Dat, Director of the Hung Temple Historic Site, stated: "Worshipping the Hung Kings—the Ancestors of the nation—is a symbol connecting the past with the present. Preserving and promoting these values is our way of protecting national cultural identity during the process of integration and development."
Today, the Hung King Worship Belief holds a special place in the hearts of Vietnamese people, both at home and abroad. The incense sticks offered to the Hung Kings not only express gratitude but also remind each individual of their responsibility to uphold the nation’s fine traditions. Thus, the Hung King Worship Belief is both a cultural heritage and a sacred symbol of solidarity and the aspiration for Vietnam’s sustainable development.
