Convergence for development

The merger has given rise to a new Phu Tho Province, not merely through the expansion of administrative boundaries, but more profoundly, through the integration of three cultural, geographical, and economic zones full of potential. A sacred origin, a strategic heartland, and an emerging growth pole are gradually forming a new highlight on the national development map.

The sacred land - Birthplace of the Nation

Phu Tho is deeply rooted in the collective memory of the Vietnamese people as a sacred land. It is no coincidence that this was the site chosen by the Hung Kings to establish the nation thousands of years ago. Known as Đất Tổ, or “Land of the Ancestors,” Phu Tho is more than a cultural symbol, it embodies a unique political and social identity, representing the origin of the nation and the spirit of unity.

The Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day, held annually at the Hung King Temple Complex, has transcended the status of a local festival to become a national celebration. From Phu Tho, traditional cultural values have spread widely, serving as a spiritual foundation for generations of Vietnamese people in the journey of nation-building.

Now, following the merger with the former provinces of Hoa Binh and Vinh Phuc, the concept of national origin has expanded in both scope and substance. Beyond being the birthplace of Van Lang, the first state in Vietnamese history, the new Phu Tho links three major cultural regions: the northern midlands, the Northwest, and the Red River Delta. This historical convergence not only creates a new administrative unit but also gives rise to a cultural and social entity rich in identity, depth, and sustainable development potential.

Strategic location - A key gateway in Northern Vietnam

One of Phu Tho’s most significant advantages is its location. Situated in the heart of the northern midland and mountainous region, bordering Hanoi and key economic hubs such as Tuyen Quang, Lao Cai, Son La, Ninh Binh, and Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho is a strategic gateway connecting the Northwest with the Red River Delta.

It lies at the crossroads of major economic and transport corridors, including the Hanoi–Lao Cai–Kunming corridor, National Highway 6 linking Hanoi to the Northwest, and the Red River corridor stretching from upstream to downstream.

Convergence for development

The province’s well-developed transport infrastructure along the Red River corridor supports socio-economic growth, positioning Phu Tho as a vital transit hub for goods, trade, and services across the region. With access to a market of nearly 30 million people, the province is fast emerging as a promising destination for investment.

Urban planners and logistics experts see strong potential in Phu Tho becoming a key logistics center, a satellite urban zone, and an industrial hub supporting the broader Northern industrial network.

Multimodal transport infrastructure - A catalyst for growth

Phu Tho boasts one of the most comprehensive transport networks in the region. The Noi Bai-Lao Cai Expressway cuts through the province from southeast to northwest, directly linking it to Hanoi and the Lao Cai border area, serving as a backbone for economic development and logistics.

The national highway system, comprising Highways 2, 6, 32, 70, 21, and 32C, forms an integrated road network that efficiently connects town and district centers within the province and to neighboring regions.

The Hanoi–Lao Cai railway runs through Viet Tri, Phu Tho, and Ha Hoa, facilitating convenient passenger and freight transport. Inland waterways along the Red, Lo, Da, and Bua rivers also contribute to freight circulation and river tourism development.

With Noi Bai International Airport just 60 kilometers away and direct routes connecting to the capital, the province is well-positioned to access global markets, attract foreign investment, and foster open economic sectors.

Diverse economic landscape - From organic farming to modern industry

Beyond its transportation strengths, Phu Tho has a dynamic and diverse economy. The eastern region (formerly part of Vinh Phuc) is emerging as an industrial, service, and urban development hub, with major industrial parks such as Thang Long Vinh Phuc, Ba Thien, Nam Binh Xuyen, and Nam Phuc Yen. Key sectors include electronics, automotive, precision engineering, logistics, and supporting industries, all of which contribute significantly to the provincial budget and employment.

Convergence for development

Meanwhile, the central area (Viet Tri and its surroundings) serves as the province’s administrative, political, and cultural nucleus. Investments in urban infrastructure, education, healthcare, and cultural facilities are gradually shaping a smart, livable city with regional influence.

The western and southwestern zones (formerly part of Hoa Binh and the mountainous districts of Phu Tho) have been designated for agriculture, forestry, medicinal cultivation, and ecotourism. With favorable natural conditions for organic farming and the cultivation of rare medicinal herbs, the region also boasts hot mineral springs in areas such as Kim Boi and Thanh Thuy, offering potential for community-based tourism and wellness resorts tied to the cultural heritage of the Muong, Dao, and Tay ethnic groups.

A sacred land for dustainable development

Phu Tho is among the few localities with a harmonious blend of natural resources, cultural heritage, and human capital. Geographically, the province spans plains, midlands, and highlands, enjoys a temperate climate, and possesses abundant water resources.

Its mineral wealth includes limestone, clay, kaolin, and brown coal, along with hot mineral water sources—supporting industries ranging from construction materials and pharmaceuticals to wellness and tourism.

As descendants of the nation’s founders, the people of Phu Tho carry a proud tradition of patriotism and resilience, from defending the homeland to pushing the boundaries of innovation. Their dynamism and creativity are evident throughout history and continue to shape the province today.

Tourism stands out as one of Phu Tho’s greatest strengths, backed by a vibrant tapestry of cultural heritage: from folk festivals and traditional craft villages to unique ethnic cultures and hundreds of ranked historical sites. These assets form a strong foundation for tourism development while contributing to the identity of the new province.

A new administrative model - Toward a modern, service-oriented overnment

Following the merger, Phu Tho is implementing a two-tier local government system in a streamlined and flexible manner. Since July 2025, the commune- and district-level governments have been reorganized into a more efficient structure focused on serving citizens and businesses.

Public administrative service centers at the commune level now operate with greater discipline, applying digital technology to reduce paperwork and improve service delivery. Key metrics—including online application rates, on-time processing, and citizen satisfaction—have all shown significant improvement.

Convergence for development

The province is also addressing transitional challenges, such as upgrading IT infrastructure, integrating digital systems, issuing accounts and digital signatures for staff, and standardizing internal procedures. These efforts, supported by specialized agencies, proactive local leadership, and public cooperation, are helping the new administrative system stabilize and function effectively.

A new growth pole in the North

With its many strengths and opportunities, Phu Tho is rapidly emerging as a new growth engine for the northern midland and mountainous region. As Vietnam advances toward rapid, sustainable, and inclusive development, Phu Tho exemplifies convergence—in geography, culture, resources, and vision.

Backed by a rich historical and cultural legacy, a spirit of innovation, and a dedicated workforce, Phu Tho is poised not only to preserve the nation’s roots but also to shape its future—a future where past and present walk hand in hand, where identity and integration coexist, and where every citizen can look forward to a prosperous, happy, and sustainable life.
