Amidst the peaceful atmosphere of Vinh Hung commune, Song Kenh Communal House stands quietly as a witness to time. More than just a sacred place of worship, it preserves values of history, architectural art, and the spiritual and cultural life of local residents. Passing through over a century, the ancient communal house remains a source of pride and a spiritual anchor for generations of people in the ancestral land of Phu Tho.

Song Kenh Communal House – a national historical and architectural art monument, and a hub for spiritual and cultural activities of Vinh Hung commune residents.
Located in Nghia Hung village, the communal house was built in 1881 to worship Minh Quang Dai Vuong and Duong Dong Dai Vuong – two generals from the Hung King era who successfully assisted Saint Tan Vien in defending the nation and helping the people settle in peace.
Through the ups and downs of history, the communal house suffered significant damage from wars. Originally constructed in the architectural shape of the Han character “Ding”, its inner sanctuary was destroyed during the resistance war against French colonialists. Currently, only the five-compartment main ceremonial hall remains almost intact. Nevertheless, its unique architectural values persist through the wooden pillar system, tiled roofs, and sophisticated carvings that bear the profound imprint of ancient artisans.

A pair of flanking dragons on the roof, crafted according to traditional architectural art, enhances the ancient and majestic appearance of the communal house.
The communal house features a double-roof design and gables flush with the wall, supported by a system of 24 wooden pillars resting on round stone bases. Many precious artifacts, including altars, horizontal lacquered boards, pairs of wood-carved scrolls, ornamental canopies, and an ancient bronze bell are still preserved, demonstrating the exquisite carving and artistic skills of late 19th-century artisans.

Mr. Phan Huy Phong – Head of the Song Kenh Communal House Monument Management Subcommittee, lights candles at the inner sanctuary dedicated to the two Kings.
In 2000, Song Kenh Communal House was recognized as a National Historical-Cultural Monument. This served as a foundation for the locality to continue conserving and promoting the monument’s values. Mr. Le Van Phuong, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Vinh Hung commune, stated: 'The preservation of Song Kenh Communal House always receives close attention from the Party committee, local authorities, and unanimous support from the people. Alongside maintaining the architectural integrity, the locality has also stepped up communication to raise community awareness in heritage protection, contributing to traditional education for the younger generation.'
Beyond its historical status, Song Kenh Communal House serves as a center for cultural and spiritual life. On every holiday, Tet, the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, or traditional festival days, locals gather at the communal house to offer incense in memory of their ancestors, praying for a peaceful life and favorable weather. These activities help preserve cultural identity and strengthen community bonds.
Having been involved in monument management for many years, Mr. Phan Huy Phong shared: 'To us, the communal house is an invaluable asset left by our ancestors. The management board regularly coordinates with local authorities and residents to clean, maintain the landscape, and preserve artifacts to keep the values of the communal house intact.'

The ancient bronze bell at Song Kenh Communal House is used during festivals, full moon days, the first day of the lunar month, and local spiritual events.
Not only the management board, but every local resident is well aware that protecting the communal house is a shared responsibility of the entire community. From general cleaning days of the compound and taking care of green trees to reminding children to maintain a civilized lifestyle when coming to worship, everything is done voluntarily by the villagers.
Mr. Phan Van Thao, Party Cell Secretary of Cho village, said: 'Song Kenh Communal House is the pride of local residents. Everyone wishes to preserve it as a way of keeping our roots and hometown cultural identity to pass down to future generations.'
To many residents of Vinh Hung, Song Kenh Communal House is not just a place of worship but also a realm of childhood and hometown memories. Ms. Chu Thi Viet, a resident of Cho village, shared: 'Since I was a child, I followed my grandparents to the communal house to offer incense. Each time I return, looking at the old roof tiles, rows of wooden pillars, and the rising smoke of incense, I am reminded of my childhood and hope that future generations will continue to preserve this communal house.'

A pair of horses placed on both sides of the altar are artifacts associated with traditional worship spaces, contributing to the solemnity of the village guardian deity’s worshiping place.
Present for over 140 years in the rural area of Vinh Hung, Song Kenh Communal House remains a convergence of historical, cultural, and spiritual values. Amidst modern life, the mossy roof silently reminds everyone of their roots, the moral principle of “When drinking water, remember its source”, and the responsibility to preserve traditional values for generations to come.
