Two Heritages in One Sacred Space

Tro Temple in Tu Xa commune, Lam Thao district (now Phung Nguyen commune) is not only a historical and cultural relic but also a place where two streams of heritage—tangible and intangible—intersect. Here, stories of ancestral origins and fertility aspirations intertwine with the martial spirit, creating a unique cultural space.

Tro Temple, dedicated to the goddess Ngo Thi Thanh and the fertility symbols No – Nuong, was recognized as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic in 2007. Beyond its role as a sacred place of worship, the temple is also the main stage for the Tro Tram Festival, a national intangible cultural heritage. Every year, on the 11th and 12th days of the first lunar month, Tro Temple becomes the focal point of the festival. Traditional rituals—especially the “Secret Ceremony” (Le Mat) associated with fertility beliefs—are solemnly re-enacted, expressing prayers for peace and abundant harvests.

In 2019, Tro Temple underwent renovation with a total investment of VND 17 billion, giving it a more spacious appearance. After restoration, the temple covers an area of 1,188 square meters, including structures such as the Gate (Nghi Mon), the Temple itself, a guest house, and auxiliary facilities—all designed in harmony to form an architectural complex that is both ancient and modern.

If the Tro Tram Festival only takes place over a few short days, another heritage silently nurtures the cultural space of Tro Temple throughout the year. That is Binh Dinh Traditional Martial Arts, a national intangible cultural heritage inscribed in 2012. More than just a martial art, Binh Dinh is the crystallization of martial spirit, resilience, and the noble code of

conduct of the Vietnamese people. At Tro Temple, this martial art has become a sporting activity and a healthy playground for generations. Each afternoon, the temple courtyard comes alive with the resounding shouts and powerful movements of young martial artists.

The Binh Dinh Traditional Martial Arts Club (Hoang Quan Binh Dinh Martial Arts School) was established here in 2006, headed by Master Hoang Thach Quan. He shared: “Martial arts not only help children improve their health and self-defense skills but also cultivate morality, confidence, and discipline. This is a meaningful playground, especially during the summer, helping them stay away from dangers like ponds and rivers, or from spending too much time on television and mobile phones.”

Currently, Binh Dinh Traditional Martial Arts is being prepared for nomination to UNESCO for recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further affirming its immense cultural value.

In addition to techniques, students are trained in discipline and self-awareness

The presence of Binh Dinh martial arts at Tro Temple is a vivid testament to the connection between tangible and intangible heritage. Tro Temple is not merely an ancient architectural site but a living cultural space where traditional values are preserved and passed down through generations.
