In the early days of April, as the entire nation turns its heart toward the Hung Kings' Commemoration - Hung Temple Festival, the ancient village of Hung Lo (Van Phu Ward) has become a magnet for both domestic and international tourists. Beyond its well-preserved ancient architecture and unique traditions, the village offers visitors an authentic and intimate glimpse into rural life in the Ancestral Land. Consequently, an increasing number of foreign delegations are seeking out this destination to deeply experience the beauty of Vietnam’s roots.
A delegation from the French Republic visits Hung Lo Communal House.
Nestled along the gentle Lo River, Hung Lo ancient village retains the nearly intact structure of a traditional Vietnamese village, featuring the village gate, banyan trees, water wells, and the communal house yard. Hung Lo Communal House, a quintessential architectural work dating back to the Late Le Dynasty, is renowned for its intricate carvings and serves as the spiritual and cultural heart of the local community.
Stepping through the village gate, visitors encounter ancient houses hundreds of years old, carefully preserved through generations. Moss-covered roof tiles, laterite walls, and ironwood pillars create a quiet, nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of a bygone era.
A standout highlight of Hung Lo is the performance of Xoan Singing — an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Despite the ups and downs of history, Xoan singing has been preserved and passed down from generation to generation. Performances held within the communal house or ancient homes have become a signature tourism product.
Mr. Tran Huy Nam, a member of the An Thai Xoan guild, shared: "During this season, we proactively arrange our family and farm work to serve tourists. Introducing Xoan singing to international friends fills us with pride and a deep sense of responsibility to protect our ancestors' legacy."

Tourists enjoy the experience of ancient village Xoan singing right at the communal house.
Hung Lo also showcases the community’s efforts in linking preservation with tourism development. Residents actively refurbish their homes, maintain the landscape, and foster a friendly environment to leave a lasting impression on visitors. In recent years, international guests have not only visited but also directly participated in cultural activities like singing Xoan and wrapping Banh Chung (square sticky rice cake).
Under the guidance of locals, visitors learn to wrap Banh Chung — a traditional dish associated with the legend of Lang Lieu and a symbol of wet-rice agricultural civilization. Using dong leaves, glutinous rice, green beans, and pork, the skillful hands of locals and tourists alike create neat, square cakes that embody a long-standing cultural story.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Yen, owner of a 200-year-old ancient house, shared: "My family regularly welcomes foreign guests. Many are delighted to wrap Banh Chung with us and chat about our customs. Despite the language barrier, these activities create a warm and close connection."

At Hung Lo ancient village, visitors are fascinated by the traditional rice noodle production and joining locals in wrapping Banh Chung.
Furthermore, the traditional rice noodle craft is another major draw. From grinding rice and steaming the batter to drying the noodles, every step is done manually and meticulously. Tourists are encouraged to observe and participate, gaining a deeper understanding of the diligence and craftsmanship of Vietnamese farmers.
For many international guests, watching Xoan singing in the communal house space leaves the deepest impression. Without a grand stage, the simple beats of drums and clappers combined with rustic lyrics conquer listeners through sheer cultural depth and sincere emotion.
Ms. Marie-Paule, representing a French tour group, expressed: "I am very impressed with my experience at Hung Lo. The people are friendly, and activities like wrapping Banh Chung, making rice noodles, and listening to Xoan singing are fascinating. These are experiences we can hardly find elsewhere."
Since the beginning of the year, Hung Lo has welcomed more than 10 international delegations, primarily river cruise tourists. The high level of visitor satisfaction affirms the village’s correct direction in community-based tourism. By reasonably exploiting traditional values and linking them with practical experiences, the village has significantly enhanced its appeal.
From its ancient rooftops to the melodies of Xoan and the rhythm of daily life, Hung Lo ancient village is telling a vibrant story of Vietnamese cultural identity, captivating travelers on their journey back to the nation’s origins.
