Taking place right after the traditional Lunar New Year, the Gau Tao Festival in Pa Co Commune is a vibrant rendezvous for both domestic and international tourists to explore a unique cultural space and experience traditional festive activities.
Hmong youths perform the traditional Khen dance on the main stage of the Gau Tao Festival.
The Gau Tao Festival is also affectionately known as the “Mountain Excursion” —essentially a spring festival celebrated in the heart of nature. According to Hmong legend, the festival originated from a ritual practiced by childless couples who sought blessings from the mountain gods. Over time, it has evolved into a sacred rite and an indispensable part of the spiritual life of the Hmong people.

Performed with deep respect and solemnity, the Neu tree ceremony opens the festivities of the Gau Tao Festival.
The Hmong community in Pa Co consists of two main branches: the Black Hmong (Mong Du) and the Flower Hmong (Mong Lenh). Having migrated from regions like Tuyen Quang and Yen Bai between the 15th and 19th centuries, the Hmong in Pa Co have united to preserve their heritage while leveraging the majestic natural landscape to develop sustainable tourism.

The Xoe dance attracts both the Hmong community and a large number of tourists.
The 2026 Gau Tao Festival was held at the community stadium in Xa Linh Village. At the center of the festival stands the Neu tree (ritual bamboo pole), a sacred symbol representing the harmony between heaven and earth, humans, and ancestors.
The ritual involving the Neu tree is the most significant part of the ceremony.

The “Mountain Excursion” is also a time for those living far from home to return to their villages. It is a stage for Hmong men to showcase their talent with the Khen and for Hmong girls to display their skills in Pao throwing. Visitors can immerse themselves in local customs, explore unique cuisine, and participate in hands-on activities.
Ms. Nguyen Thao Linh, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: "I am mesmerized by the vibrant colors of the Hmong costumes, the warm hospitality, and the fascinating experience of beeswax painting."
