One of the most unique and natural masterpieces of communal house gates in the Ancestral Land is found in Phu Hau village, Son Dong commune. This site has long enchanted numerous photographers who journey here to capture timeless images of Northern Vietnamese rural beauty. A “treasure” that has weathered the elements for hundreds of years, the gate stands as a testament to the culture of Son Dong and the local people’s journey in preserving their heritage.
The entire gate is completely embraced by the roots of a centuries-old Bodhi tree, creating a rare and singular beauty. The gate structure is nestled within the ancient Bodhi tree, whose rugged bark bears the unmistakable marks of passing years.
The traces of time and antiquity are clearly visible in each layer of plain brick and every intertwining Bodhi root that wraps around the structure.

The “guardians” of the communal house—sacred animal statues handcrafted by ancient artisans—still radiate a sense of solemnity and antiquity despite centuries of exposure to the sun and rain.

Every spring, young Bodhi leaves sprout from the trunk of the hundred-year-old tree, bringing a fresh and vibrant energy to the ancient roots and the local landscape.

The faded hue of old bricks and the layer of ancient moss clinging to the trunk and roots further enhance the venerable and extraordinary beauty of the Phu Hau gate.

Mr. Canh, Head of the Communal House Management Board, shared that the Bodhi tree “embracing” the gate has been officially recognized as a Heritage Tree by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment. A stele has been placed at the base of the tree, designating it as a "Vietnam Heritage Tree."

Day after day, the centenarian Bodhi tree casts its shade over the communal courtyard. Its roots continue to grow, tightly gripping the weathered bricks and deepening the ancient aura of the communal house.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Lap, Vice Chairman of the Son Dong Commune People’s Committee, noted: "The commune currently has over 30 historical sites, including five national-level relics. With its unique beauty and rare cultural values, Phu Hau Communal House has been integrated into the “Son Dong: Connecting the Land of Heritage” tour. Our vision is to transform local heritage into a “green economy,” using culture as the driving force for local socio-economic development."
