Tien Du Flower Village Hustling into the Tet Season

These days, the people in Thuong Flower Village (Tien Du Commune, Phu Ninh District) are rushing into the season of caring for chrysanthemums. The flower growers are almost always present day and night in the flower fields, busily watering, fertilizing, and tending to the rows of flowers, preparing for a beautiful and high-quality flower season to serve the 2025 Lunar New Year market.

Visiting the chrysanthemum garden of Mr. Dang Xuan Huy, located in Area 6, Tien Du Commune, a person with 23 years of experience in growing flowers in Thuong Village, and owning more than 1 hectare of land for growing flowers, Mr. Huy’s family plans to provide more than 10,000 chrysanthemums to the market for the 2025 Lunar New Year.

Mr. Huy shared: “Every year, like clockwork, at the beginning of the 9th lunar month, the villagers start preparing the soil and setting up lights to care for the flowers, preparing for the Tet season. This year’s flower season started with challenges due to dry weather and little rain, but at this point, the weather has stabilized, the plants are growing well, and they have started to bud. Last year, five days before Tet, I sold the flowers to traders at the field at a price of 4,000 VND per chrysanthemum, and I hope that we can maintain the same price this year."

In the busy atmosphere of the year-end days, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tai’s family, the head of Thuong Flower Village, is also busy with flower care tasks. Mr. Tai said: “Currently, the flower care process is in the stage of spraying pesticides to prevent pests and diseases. To ensure the flowers meet the quality standards, we have to spray pesticides for pests and fungal diseases, as well as apply fertilizer every 20 days. Chrysanthemums that meet the standards must have green leaves, straight stems, long petals, thick stems, and a height of 80 - 110 cm.”

According to Mr. Tai, the wholesale price of chrysanthemums in Thuong Village usually ranges from 3,000 to 4,000 VND per flower, depending on the quality and timing. If the flower season is favorable, the people can earn a profit of up to 60% compared to the investment costs. This is a relatively stable source of income during the Tet season, helping flower growers cover living expenses and invest in future seasons.

Tien Du Commune has nearly 30 households involved in flower farming. It is estimated that Thuong Flower Village will supply about 200,000 chrysanthemums to the 2025 Tet market. Although the number of flowers is expected to decrease by nearly half compared to previous years, partly due to climate change, the villagers still hope that the weather will be favorable from now until the Lunar New Year and that the flowers will sell at a high price.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Chat, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Tien Du Commune, said: "Thuong Flower Village is one of the traditional craft villages of Tien Du Commune, with more than 20 years of formation and development. In 2001, only a few households experimented with growing chrysanthemums to sell at the market. Recognizing the high economic value of flower farming, by 2004, many households in the commune began growing flowers. Despite facing many challenges, the people here have remained committed to the profession because, for them, flower farming is not only a livelihood but also a source of pride for the traditional craft village. On average, a flower season supplying the Tet market helps local people earn an income of 40-50 million VND."
