Enhancing the economic value of seafood specialties

In order to exploit the potential from the water surface, specialty and indigenous aquatic breeds with high economic value are being expanded by people in the province to expand the scale and area of farming, contributing to diversifying farming objects and increasing income for farmers.

Enhancing the economic value of seafood specialties

In the province, the total aquaculture area is more than 10,000 hectares; The proportion of specialty and indigenous breeds with high economic value (singlefish, catfish, barbs, grass carp, black carp, carp, tilapia, giant river prawns, Pila conica...) accounts for about 60% of the breed structure. The Agriculture sector and localities have applied scientific and technical advances to aquaculture, both improving product value and contributing to changing the production practices of farmers. Through support programs and model building, aquatic species suitable to climate conditions, water sources, climate sub-regions... are replicated and deployed in many types and forms of farming.

In the province, cold water fish farming has been deployed for high economic value in some areas with spring water sources and appropriate hydrochemical conditions in Ha Hoa, Yen Lap, Thanh Son, Tan Son districts, providing from 40-50 tons of commercial fish per year.

In My Luong commune, Yen Lap district, people started experimenting with sturgeon farming from 2021. In 2023, households linked up and established Suoi Nga Dong May Agricultural Cooperative to support each other in technology and product consumption. Mr. Nguyen Duc Hanh - Director of the Cooperative said: “Sturgeon is a species that adapts to cold water, with circulating water flow. The cooperative invests in a system of pipes to bring water from the ravine so that the water can circulate continuously, ensuring supply of a necessary amount of dissolved oxygen to fish. Currently, the Cooperative has 8 fish tanks including canvas-lined tanks and built tanks, producing over 10 tons of commercial fish per year. Advanced farming techniques are applied, so the cooperative’s commercial fish survival rate after stocking reaches over 90%.

The success of high-value indigenous and specialty aquaculture models in the province not only contributes to diversifying forms and objects of farming but also opens up prospects for developing farming types with high economic value.
