Van Son Commune, known as the “Roof of the Muong Region” — or affectionately called “Cloud Valley” — sits at an altitude of around 1,000 meters above sea level. With its cool climate and majestic scenery, the area captivates visitors with layers of clouds draped like silk ribbons along the mountains each morning and afternoon.

The Untamed Beauty of the “Roof of the Muong Region”
From National Highway 6, about 10 km past Muong Bi Commune, travelers begin their journey to explore the “Roof of the Muong Region.”

The famed Nam Son mandarin orchards welcome visitors who come to tour and enjoy fruit-picking experiences
Tourism in “Cloud Valley” has year-round appeal. At this time of year, ethnic communities in the highlands are entering the harvest season for Nam Son mandarins — a regional specialty. Many tour groups eagerly travel to the “Roof of the Muong Region” for fruit-picking activities.

Local women heading to the weekly market often dress in traditional Muong skirts.
Visitors to the Van Son highlands should not miss the Bo Market, held every Tuesday and Sunday. This is one of the region’s most renowned markets, blending traditional Muong cultural traits with modern consumer habits, offering a distinctive experience in any Van Son travel itinerary.
Visitors can marvel at the mystical beauty and countless stalactite formations inside Nam Son Cave, located in Ton Hamlet of Van Son Commune.
For adventure seekers and lovers of natural wonders, Nam Son Cave in Ton Hamlet is a must-visit destination. Discovered more than two decades ago and designated a National Relic in 2008, the cave stands out for its scale and mysterious beauty. Scientists have recognized it as the most stunning and captivating cave within the Ngoc Son – Ngo Luong Nature Reserve, with stalactite formations that have developed over approximately 250 million years. The cave consists of three chambers; the central chamber features a wide lake with water depths ranging from 2 to 7 meters. The lake remains crystal-clear and cool year-round. Nam Son Cave holds a “treasure trove” of stone columns, stalactites, stalagmites, stone draperies, and numerous artifacts reflecting the history, culture, and spiritual life of the region, as well as habitats of bats, animals, and endemic species.
Van Son also offers several emerging tourism products, such as cloud-hunting combined with nature sightseeing, enjoying fresh air, and taking ethereal photos; relaxing at the abundant Mo Pond surrounded by towering mountains; or trekking to the ideal camping point on U Bo Hill. From its summit, visitors can admire panoramic views of villages, rice fields, and rolling mountains. Many travelers choose U Bo Hill as a stopover for trekking, picnics, campfires, or overnight camping.
Local tourism products that showcase Muong cultural identity are being introduced and promoted to visitors.
Once an unfamiliar destination, Van Son has now attracted many tour groups — including increasing numbers of international visitors. Community-based tourism has grown, helping to create sustainable livelihoods and improve local living standards. Homestay services and tourism activities are concentrated in Chien Hamlet, home to the Muong people whose customs and traditions have been preserved for generations. Many visitors enjoy staying at community tourism hamlets to immerse themselves in the peaceful rhythms of highland life, characterized by serene landscapes, warm-hearted residents, and fresh, distinctive ethnic cuisine.

The tranquil scenery of Chien Hamlet continues to draw visitors seeking authentic cultural and natural experiences.
Today, Van Son Commune is actively leveraging its tourism potential and advantages — from natural resources such as landscapes, caves, waterfalls, and quiet rural hamlets to rich cultural heritage, especially Muong ethnic traditions. The commune is also investing in improved transportation infrastructure, strengthening tourism promotion, enhancing service quality, and continuously developing new tourism products.
Its goal from now until 2030 is to sustainably and effectively utilize tourism resources, diversify tourism products, contribute to economic restructuring, reduce poverty, and create momentum for sustainable tourism development.
