Amidst the rolling, pristine, and sacred mountain landscapes of Tay Thien—often referred to as the “Buddhist Realm amidst the Great Forests” of Tam Dao, The Great Mandala Stupa of the Western Heaven stands majestically.

Located at the foot of Thach Ban Mountain, the Great Mandala Stupa of Tay Thien is considered the first masterpiece of Vajrayana Buddhist architecture in Vietnam. More than just a unique architectural feat, it serves as a converging space for faith, history, culture, and the human aspiration toward goodness.

According to the ancient concepts of Vajrayana Buddhism spanning thousands of years, the Great Stupa possesses spiritual power and value akin to the “Cintamani” (Wish-fulfilling Jewel)—a symbol of fulfillment, wisdom, and compassion.

From a distance, the Great Stupa stands out prominently against the expansive horizon of Tay Thien. The structure reaches a height of 29 meters and is built upon a massive pedestal with a diameter of 60 meters, situated on flat, open ground.

Historical records and archaeological traces suggest that the Tay Thien – Tam Dao region has preserved significant imprints of Vajrayana Buddhism since antiquity. Consequently, in 2011, the Great Mandala Stupa was officially commenced within the Tay Thien Scenic Site (Dai Dinh Commune) as a continuation of the spiritual lineage that has existed for millennia on this sacred land.

Stepping into the Great Stupa complex, visitors immediately sense a pervasive tranquility and relaxation.

The art of Vajrayana Buddhist architecture is vividly and intuitively expressed, from the overall layout to the decorative details. Every shape and line contains philosophical depth, bringing individuals closer to noble spiritual values.

The atmosphere here seems entirely detached from the noise and hustle of daily life, helping people quiet their minds and rediscover inner balance.

A highlight within the grounds that cannot be overlooked is the presence of Bodhi trees planted throughout the site.

Today, the Great Mandala Stupa of Tay Thien is not only a pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from home and abroad but also a special cultural and spiritual space, contributing to the rich spiritual identity of Phu Tho province.
