Unique multi-spur cocks at Hung King Temple
During the Hung King Temple Festival and Ancestral Land Culture-Tourism in 2024, at Tan Son District Cultural Camp (Phu Bung Hill area - Hung King Temple Historical Relic Site) exhibited 9-spur cock or multi-spur cocks.
Many chickens are especially rare in Tan Son district, associated with the legend of “Son Tinh, Thuy Tinh” from Hung KIngs era. These are native breeds of chickens, which have very different characteristics from other breeds, such as legs with a large number of spur (usually between 6 and 8 spur).
The chickens were originally in the wild, then domesticated by the local people, grown in the natural way of grazing. The total number of chickens is raised in the area of Tan Son district about 20,000 to 30,000 chicks per year, concentrated mainly in the communes of Tan Phu, Xuan Dai, Kiet Son, Minh Dai, Kim Thuong, Van Luong, Xuan Son, Tan Son, Lai Dong, etc.
Cocks are sold at a price of between VND200,000 - 300,000 for common chickens and between VND2 - 10 million for special chicken (from nice 6 to 8 spurs, or event 9 spurs).
In order to preserve and develop this variety of chickens, Tan Son district has implemented programmes, associated projects, consumer livestock, and development associated with the eradication of poverty and high economic efficiency.
