More than one million people wearing red shirts with yellow stars across the country joined the walking campaign on the morning of 16 August, aiming for the goal of a united, strong, and sustainable Viet Nam in a new era. The programme was jointly held by Nhan Dan Newspaper and the Ministry of Public Security to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day.

At the ceremony, more than 1.1 million people joined the walk in person in 34 provinces and cities, while over 138,000 registered to participate online through the programme’s website.
At the Phu Tho venue, held at Hung Vuong University, participants included Mr. Nguyen Khac Hieu, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee; Colonel Ta Duc Dien, Deputy Director of the Provincial Police; leaders of provincial departments and localities; along with a large number of armed forces officers, students, and local residents.
At 6:00 a.m., delegates joined millions nationwide in turning towards historic Ba Dinh Square via live broadcast to witness the national flag-raising ceremony, singing the National Anthem together and stepping forward for a united, strong, and sustainable Vietnam.

Following the launch command from the Hanoi venue, at Hung Vuong University, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Khac Hieu, together with nearly 5,000 officers, soldiers, students, and local residents, joined a walking event along Nguyen Tat Thanh Street.
In addition, people across all other communes and wards in the province also responded by walking in groups of hundreds at each location, contributing to the realization of the event’s goal: “one billion steps into the new era.”
The walk campaign is a highly meaningful community event, taking place as the country enters a new development phase with the reorganisation of administrative units. This is not just a sport event in response to the national exercise movement following the example of President Ho Chi Minh, but also a journey of millions of hearts beating in unison towards the shared goal of a united and strong Viet Nam.
The programme is also expected to contribute to reducing carbon emissions and raising awareness on environmental protection in line with Viet Nam’s commitment to the net zero emissions goal at the COP26 conference.
After the event, the Phu Tho Provincial Police conducted communication and legal education campaigns on various topics for the public regarding crime prevention and maintaining public order and security.
