Maintaining the tranditional wicker craft
Ngo Xa commune (Cam Khe district) is well-known for the region’s oldest wicker craft. Through the ups and downs of time, industrial items made of plastic emerged with low costs and convenience, making bamboo and rattan products impossible to market, and the wicker craft eventually faded away. However, with a love for traditional crafts and a conviction in the long-term benefits that handcrafted items created from natural materials provide, many families in Ngo Xa continue to practice, maintain, and teach their traditions by focusing on the essence of wicker craft.
Wicker craft is considered a “hereditary” vocation in Ngo Xa territory. Currently, the entire commune includes over 300 houses engaged in the profession, with over 570 workers.
Selecting raw materials is extremely crucial of the wicker craft. The selected bamboo is ancient, with huge, thick and stiff stems.
Although wicker craft is not difficult, it needs the worker to be extremely skilled and exact.
Wicker artisans may create many goods for daily use out of rustic bamboo slats.
Because the value of wicker craft is low, the elderly and women make up the majority of those who continue to do it in the community. The typical working day is barely about VND50-70 thousand. Generations of Ngo Xa people continue to work every day to preserve and pass on the traditional wicker craft to the next generation in order to promote the essence of their ancestors.
